Manufactured by Roche laboratories, Xenical is a weight loss prescription drug that contains the active ingredient, orlistat. Xenical works in unique manner to aid weight loss as it targets 30% of the dietary fat and prevents it from being digested. By blocking one third of the fat that you eat, Xenical reduces the amount of calories absorbed into your body without you eating less food. By targeting fat loss, Xenical also promotes weight loss, prevents subsequent weight regain and lowers health risks associated with obesity.
In addition to aiding weight loss, Xenical also helps with the following:
You can request a prescription for the Xenical treatment if you are obese (BMI over 30), or are overweight (BMI between 25 and 30), are at risk for medical conditions related to weight or body fat, such as diabetes, high cholesterol or hypertension.
Xenical affects your body’s absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Therefore, you may have to take daily multivitamin supplements containing vitamins D, E, and K and beta carotene once a day 2 hours before or after taking Xenical.
With the exception of Xenical, the current prescription drugs for weight loss send signals to your brain telling it you have a lesser appetite. In order to get to the brain, these drugs enter the blood stream. You may feel less hungry after you take these treatments which can lead to weight loss through eating less.
Xenical, on the other hand, does not enter the blood stream, nor does it affect the brain. Xenical also does not reduce appetite. It simply blocks the digestion and absorption of fat and helps you to control your fat intake.
You cannot get addicted to Xenical, as it does not send signals to the brain. It has been proven to be non-addictive in its nature.
The normal dosage of Xenical is 1 120mg capsule to be taken with each of your 3 main meals per day. You can take it immediately before, during a meal or up to an hour after a meal. Xenical works in the presence of dietary fat only. If you fail to have a main meal or if you have a meal containing no fat, you can skip your Xenical dose.
However, if you doctor schedules your Xenical dosage differently, follow their instructions closely.
Xenical’s side effects are strictly gastrointestinal in nature and related to its action of blocking the digestion of ingested fat. The increased fat in the stool can cause any of the following:
