Contraceptive accidents happen when you least expect them to; there’s no shame in forgetting to take your regular birth control pill or realising that your chosen method of contraception hasn’t worked. Emergency contraception exists to help you get through these unfortunate situations so that you still have a choice to avoid unwanted pregnancy. If you have had unprotected sex or if your contraception has failed, you have 2 emergency contraception options to choose from. Most women prefer to use the morning-after-pill, which is a contraceptive pill that can be used up to several days after unprotected intercourse. Otherwise you can use an IUD, a small T shaped piece of copper or plastic that is placed into the opening of the womb to prevent sperm from entering.

There are 2 main branded emergency contraception pills which you can buy on prescription. Levonelle is the most widely used; it can prevent pregnancy for up to 3 days after unprotected sex. The alternative, a new emergency contraceptive pill called ellaOne is effective for 5 days after unprotected sex.

How do emergency contraceptive pills work?

The 2 contraceptive pills that we offer, Levonelle and ellaOne, both work by affecting the hormones within your ovaries. Levonelle pills use a synthetic hormone called levonorgestral, which disrupts ovulation during the early stages of an egg’s development. ellaOne uses ulipristal works on the hormone receptors to severely delay the release of an egg from the ovaries to prevent it from being fertilised by the sperm.

What other treatment can I use instead of a morning-after-pill?

If you feel uncomfortable taking either Levonelle or EllaOne emergency contraceptive pills you can request for an IUD to be fitted. An IUD is a small copper device made specifically to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. It comes in the shape of a T and is proven to be 98% effective. The benefit of using an IUD is that the device can be fitted up to 5 days after unprotected sex to prevent against pregnancy. Unlike other forms of emergency contraception, IUDs can be used for long term contraception and can be used for up to 10 years. The downside to wearing an IUD is that they are particularly uncomfortable and many surgeries and clinics do not perform the procedure.

Do I still need to use my regular contraceptive?

You still need to use your regular method of contraception when using a prescription contraceptive pill. It’s safe for you to take one emergency contraceptive pill per menstrual cycle. If you have unprotected sex again during this period, the emergency contraceptives will not be able to prevent pregnancy. After taking Levonelle or ellaOne, use a barrier contraceptive even if you are taking birth control pills, to ensure you are protected until your next menstrual cycle.
